In this video, carpenter Nathan Gilbert shares a few connection options for cable railings systems and the best way to maintain each system. Cable railings are trendy, so carpenters tend to install a lot of them. These railings use fasteners attached to posts with steel cables strewn between them. A series of these lines can create a safe railing system that looks great and won’t obstruct the view like thicker balusters might.
Common Fastener Types
There are several fastener options out there to use when installing cable railings, but the three most common are clip, lag bolt, and base plate fasteners. Each varies in how it attaches to the post and cable, but the general concept is that they secure the cable in place and allow the user to adjust the tension. The clips secure to the face of the post with a bracket and screws. The lag attachment threads into the post. The base plate fastener fits through a hole drilled all the way through the post.
Attachment Types
There are a few ways to secure a cable to a fastener. The first is to crimp the fastener onto the cable with a hydraulic crimper. The other option is a slide-on system that allows users to slide the cable through the fastener. Crimping is far more permanent but the slide-on options are also secure and adjustable.
Leave Room for Adjustment
Regardless of the fastener system chosen, it’s important to leave room for adjustment. When installing your cable railing system, be sure to leave ¾ of an inch of exposed threads on both ends to allow the cable system to be tightened seasonally and as the cable stretches.
How to Maintain Cables
These cables need a bit of maintenance, just like everything else. Nathan suggests keeping them clean by scrubbing them with a nylon brush and a rust-cleaning solution and lubricating the different fittings with oil to keep them free and adjustable. This should be done a minimum of once per year.
Resources
For maintenance, use a soft nylon brush to remove dirt and wash your railing with warm water and mild dish soap. If you see signs of rust use a rust remover to clear any signs of rust. Use a protective lubricant coating to protect the metal from rust and corrosion.
